Zinc alloy plasterboard anchors (often called WallMates or metal speed plugs) are heavy-duty, self-drilling fasteners designed to provide a secure grip in hollow walls. Made from high-quality zinc alloy, they are resistant to corrosion and offer significantly higher strength than standard plastic anchors.
Key Features & Specifications
Material: Strong zinc alloy that resistant to rust and deformation.
Load Capacity: Typically supports light-to-medium loads from 10kg to 22.7kg (50 lbs) depending on the specific model and wall thickness.
Self-Drilling Design: Features a sharp "zip tip" or drill point that punctures plasterboard without needing a pilot hole.
Flush Finish: Low-profile heads allow for a clean, flush installation against the wall surface.
Compatibility: Most models are designed to work with 8-gauge (8g) screws.
White plasterboard anchors are typically made of nylon or PVC and are designed for securing light to medium-duty items in cavity walls. Because they are non-conductive, white nylon anchors are preferred for installations near electrical wiring.
Popular Types and Specifications
Self-Drilling (WallMate style): These feature a sharp point and coarse thread that cuts directly into the plasterboard without a pilot hole.
Capacity: Typically holds up to 10kg (22 lbs) per anchor.
Common Sizes: Available in lengths such as 33mm, 40mm, and 42mm.
Compatibility: Designed to work with 6g to 10g screws.
Expansion/Butterfly Plugs: These "plane type" anchors expand behind the board when a screw is inserted to provide a secure grip.
Spring Toggles: Heavy-duty white plastic toggles use a spring mechanism to lock against the back of the wall for higher weight loads.
