SCUTCH COMBS

Scutch combs are replaceable, double-sided steel inserts used in masonry for surface preparation, cleaning, and shaping stone or brickwork. They feature small teeth that "bite" into hard materials, making them essential for creating texture or grooves to help new plaster or render adhere to a wall.

Key Uses

Surface Preparation: Roughening surfaces before rendering or plastering so the mixture has something to grip.

Cleaning Masonry: Removing old mortar, dirt, and debris from brick joints or sandstone surfaces.

Shaping and Chasing: Trimming stones, shaping mortar joints, and cutting channels for electrical back boxes.

Restoration: Refining and cleaning surfaces during historical masonry repairs.

How to Use Them

They are not standalone tools; they must be inserted into a scutch hammer or a scutch chisel/holder:

Insertion: Press the comb into the slot of the holder.

Double-Sided Design: When one side becomes blunt, you can knock it out sideways with a hammer, flip it over, and use the second sharp edge.

Operation: For precision, place the tool on the target area and strike the end with a club hammer, or use the scutch hammer directly for trimming.
