These packs feature zinc-passivated steel "U" type or captive nuts designed to secure panels and components without traditional bolts.
Captive nuts and speed nuts are both fasteners designed to simplify assembly—particularly in "blind" locations where you cannot reach behind a panel—but they differ primarily in construction, strength, and how they secure a screw.
1. Structure and Design
Speed Nut (U-Nut/Sheet Metal Nut): A one-piece, stamped spring-steel fastener, often shaped like a "U" or "J". It does not have a separate, traditional nut inside; instead, it uses the edge of the stamped steel to form the threads.
2. Thread Type and Strength
Speed Nut: Uses self-locking, heat-treated spring steel that cuts its own thread pattern as the screw is driven in. These are generally meant for lighter, non-structural applications, such as automotive interior panels, trim, and electronics.
3. Installation and Usage
Speed Nut: Designed for "blind" locations, where you cannot reach behind a panel to hold a nut. They clip over the edge of a panel. They are exceptionally fast to install and often used where high torque is not required.
