The primary difference between standard Tee hinges and Scotch Tee hinges is their strength and durability, with Scotch Tee hinges being a heavier-duty version. Both feature the signature "T" shape, consisting of a long strap (or arm) that attaches to the door/gate and a shorter rectangular plate (or knuckle) that fixes to the post or frame.
Scotch Tee Hinges (Heavy-Duty)
- Strength: Designed for heavy-duty applications, such as large gates, garage doors, and heavy timber shed doors.
- Construction: Typically heavier, thicker, and wider (often 3mm steel) than standard tee hinges, providing higher load-bearing capacity.
- Durability: Usually galvanised for corrosion resistance, often with a solid brass hinge pin to ensure smooth, long-term operation.
- Appearance: Larger, more robust appearance suited for rugged use.
Standard Tee Hinges (Light/Medium Duty)
- Strength: Best suited for lighter doors, shed doors, or small garden gates, typically supporting up to 20kg (depending on the specific model).
- Construction: Thinner and lighter, used for general-purpose DIY projects and lighter woodwork.
- Appearance: Sleeker and less intrusive than the "weighty" Scotch version.
- Application: Ideal for indoor storage cupboards, basic garden projects, and small box lids.
